I particularly appreciated:

  • Elena Yukhymenko: For the deep dive into the new features Aurora offers, including Aurora I/O-Optimized, Aurora zero-ETL integration with Amazon Redshift, and Aurora Serverless v2.
  • Nuno Barreto and Peter Rayner: For the insights about building and optimizing a data lake on Amazon S3.

Amazon Aurora cloning enables the creation of a new cluster that initially shares data pages with the original but operates as a separate, independent volume. This method is designed for speed and cost efficiency, offering a faster and more space-saving alternative to traditional data-copying techniques like snapshot restoration.

When designing a data lake on Amazon S3 for scale, both object size and format are key. Larger objects help reduce TPS on prefixes, lowers costs, and minimize data roundtrips. Choosing widely supported formats improve compatibility and performance.
